WIP - swirl

Image
Not quite sure what I am doing with this improv swirl piece.  I was just so excited that I could improv it around and around. I made it to a size I thought was big enough and then wanted to sort of swirl out  of it. It reminds me of a fabric corsage. :) I think this is the better direction but I have to set it aside and stew on a it a bit. Any comments or ideas are welcome...finish as is ?  For now I am just pleased it lays almost flat!!  linking up with WIP Wed. over at  Freshly Pieced and Let's Bee Social over at  Sew Fresh Quilts

WIP d9p flimsy

Image
A finished flimsy! Somehow, someway I pieced this together even though I have not been feeling the greatest. Something about the whites and snow and grays with the pops of color just make me happy. Linking up with WIP with Lee@ Freshly Pieced and Let's Bee Social with Lorna @ Sew Fresh Quilts

WIP post finally!

Image
Exhibit by Eye Candy Quilts   I have been away for some time but I have been sewing.  I jumped into doing this adorable block swap at LQS Crafthouse.  The pattern is super fun to do and the fabric bundles to choose from were too irresistible!  So here are a couple of the blocks from one bundle. (I have another to make up yet)   I started the month helping at the county fair. That is a fun but tiring endeavor. Hot and muggy most of the fair week.   Placed a blue on my Hillside houses and it won a cash award and certificate, and I placed a  blue on my Off-Kilter Sunrise Sunset quilt.     And....My friend Jennifer, entered our SuperNova Friendship swap quilt and won the choice of the local Modern Quilt Group.  I made the ribbon which is a mini of the guilds logo.   While at the fair, a couple charity quilting groups came in to spend their days quilting. I agreed to help quilt on my home machine several of the quilt sandwiches they had put together. I started on

I am getting way ahead of myself these days. I signed up for two classes in one week, I belong to 3 guilds now, and I am helping to host some improvisational sewing days at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum.  The Saturday class I am taking there is with Victoria Findlay Wolfe and I can't wait!! All of this leads to little getting done and lots of things started and little getting done...did I say that already???? :) So my class yesterday was with Tony Jacobson, designer for Fons and Porter Magazine.  He designed the 3 Tours star quilt and so I signed up. It is a beautiful quilt design and very fun. However I am pretty much on a budget and wanted to do more from my stash.  Mine is not going to be the traditional look of red, white and blue but I think it will be pretty just the same.   I did manage to finish all of the star blocks and started to work on my striped section when suddenly our time was up.  So fun to sew with others so if you have never d

ALYoF March ~ Something from nothing, a scrap quilt

Image
"Something from Nothing", a scrap quilt 51 x 52 1/2" Leader and ender method started early 2014 650 2 1/2 squares with bits and snips of binding ends   My goal was set HERE   I love all the bright snips of fabrics and I especially love that this was all throw away scraps. I should have made it bigger but with the mess of the stacks of 650 of these little blocks was enough AND this little guys is plenty heavy!! I spent all yesterday blocking it so it can hang on the wall. We will see if I get that done.   All stash scraps and scrappy stash backing too.  My stash is getting a work out this year and I am so happy!   My trouble on this one came with the straight line quilting. I knew I had to only quilt straight lines where the scrap corners were not. This is pretty bulky even though some of the seams are ironed open.   I started out with the idea of stitching down and then turning and stitching back up. I quickly saw that the top, no matter

Okay so last week I decided to work on some handwork for a change. I can have something portable and take to chat with my quilty friends. Then my wrist started feeling weird. That was okay as I now have another challenge I am working on this week. So this is the back of my handwork hexi piece. I think I am going to make a pillow out of it so it doesn't have to be too much bigger. Busy week this week so I hope to get back to this or work on my challenge. Tide Pools - a challenge finish

Image
A little bit of improv in my life lately! This is my finish for my guild challenge. A few months ago our new guild decided to try a challenge. We are in the process of making a guild banner and the "grunge" fabric used in the banner were thrown in a bag and we each picked two and had to make something. My color was blue green, and green blue...really pretty but together??  I thought about it for a few months. I kept thinking sea glass and water and then a friend posted an old picture of her and her husband looking at tide pools and I started piecing fabrics together. We could add in one neutral so I added in a wet sand color. No tide pools in this city but that didn't stop me from searching out some water. :)  Wavy line quilting over all helped with the watery look. The back is all the scrappy bits leftover from the scraps I used on the front! I really like how this came together. I love all the bits and fitting the curves in and adding splashes of color an

WIP Wed - improv

Image
Okay I admit that might be a long shot. In my mind this looks like a heart but to my husband...nada! So this is a block that I am using for a challenge that requires hearts. I wanted to do something improvish so I have been messing with these dots and solids to come up with something fun and new for me. Do you think it looks like a heart?  Some of my blocks are a bit more squared so not as obvious but still I was so happy with my progress until I asked my husband!! :P Linking up with WIP Wed @ Freshly Pieced and Let's Bee Social @Sew Fresh Quilts

WIP Wed = Curve it up

Image
Last night at a guild meeting I gave a demo on using the Quick Curve Ruler by Jenny and Helen @ SewKindofWonderul . I don't have many rulers but I purchased this one to do a sewalong that Jenny was doing on her blog. I quickly fell in love with the easy piecing. I was sewing curves and they were turning out every time.  No I am no affiliated with them at all but the ruler really makes curve piecing so sew easy! Some of samples from the class. I really love the stacked wave piece and I think that has lots of possibilities. There is my finished Abacus quilt that I will blog about for my Lovely year of finishes so far this year! The demo was fun and a few actually sat down and tried piecing it and all were successful! :) One new member, won the QCR giveaway. She was afraid of curves but no more......
